Mobility Assessment Courses
Thegovernment has announced reforms of the "blue badge" scheme which includestransferring assessments for blue badge eligibility from GPs to independentmobility assessors. The proposals are to amend legislation so that there is awider use of independent mobility assessments from 2012. Other changes include the transfer of fundsfrom the NHS to local authorities. Thiswill provide opportunities for occupational therapists and physiotherapists whoare ideally skilled to provide independent mobility assessments. Local Authorities are moving towards a moreconsistent approach with Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists playing a vital role to reduce misuse/abuse/ entitlement to schemes such as BlueBadges.
The day will cover
- The new government reforms and guidance
- Eligibility criteria
- Screening applicants
- The role of the Independent assessor, clinical reasoning and recommendations, appeals
- The service user's perspective.
There will be input from Occupational Therapists who already work in this area, and a consultant who has helped set up mobility services with various Local Authorities.

This course is for Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists who are interested in developing their skills in independent mobility assessment.Thisis a jointly run course by the College of Occupational Therapists and Access Independent.
